Day 1: Arrive In Yangon City

Your first afternoon is spent with a nice introduction of Yangon by visiting Sule pagoda – a 2,5000 year Burmese stupa, which is located in the heart of the city, an important religious site. Continue to the Reclining Buddha at Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda, a 213-foot-long statue with an expressive enamel face. View the story of the Buddha’s life embossed on the soles of the statue’s staggered feet. Stop a local Tea House to experience what locals do when exploring the city and followed by a stroll through Scott Market (Bogyoke Market) amid shops filled with antiques, old coins, Burmese jade and handicrafts. and in the afternoon enjoy sunset over Shwedagon Pagoda’s beautiful golden spires. Day 2: Fly To Bagan (B)
After breakfast you will be taken to the airport to fly to Bagan, the former royal capital in northern Myanmar. Bagan is the country’s spiritual center. Over 2,000 pagodas, stupas and temples dot the golden plains of Bagan. Met by a local representative and you are taken to check in to your luxurious accommodation in Bagan. Relax for a while before a very interesting tour to visit incredible Bagan temples. You will first visit Ananda Temple, one of the most surviving masterpiece of the Mon architecture and also known as the finest, largest, best preserved and most revered of the Bagan temples. Continue to shwezigon Pagoda, with its gilded stupa, followed by Ananda Temple with its four standing Buddha images. You will also visit Anauk Pwa Saw Village where you can see cotton weaving, and Minanthu Village which produces cooking oil from peanuts. You will continue with a visit the largest and best preserved 12th century Dhammayangyi Pagoda. End your day savoring a beautiful sunset view from one of the most scenic spots as you look out over the plains of Bagan. Return to your hotel and relax. Overnight in Bagan.

Day 3: Fly To Mandalay (B)
Breakfast at hotel and you will fly to Mandalay, the former capital of northern Myanmar. Upon arrival you will be met and taken directly to your hotel where you can enjoy lunch prior to checking into your room. Relax for a while after checking in to your accommodation and we will begin with our Mandalay tour to visit the Golden Palace Monastery, Shwe Kyuang. Continue on to Shwenandaw Monastery, a masterpiece of wood carving built by the last Myanmar King Thibaw in the year 1880, then head to Kuthodaw Pagoda, famous for having the world’s largest book with 729 marble slabs inscribed with the teachings of Buddha. Last stop of the day will be a drive up Mandalay Hill for a panoramic view of the sun setting over the city of Mandalay. Return to your hotel, with time to have dinner and relax. Day 4: Mandalay, Embakation The Anawrahta (B, L, D)
Breakfast at hotel and you will be transfer to the jetty to board the luxurious Anawrahta cruise. Embark and sailing north, through the Dolphin Sanctuary. There will be a morning lecture on Myanmar culture entitled “Myanmar Ways of Life” and a Myanmar Traditional Dress demonstration early in the afternoon. In the cooler air of late-afternoon we will make a tour of the pottery village of Nwe Nyein. Here you can see traditional techniques still being used to produce a wide variety of decorative pots. Tonight a longyi Cocktail Party will break the ice with your fellow guests.

Day 5: Sailing: Taguang (B, L, D)
In the morning, we offer yoga and meditation on the sun deck. Today’s sailing is through the rolling hills of the Third Defile. Passing by bamboo villages and small fishing settlements, you will realize how tranquil these lives can be. Join our chef for a cookery demonstration in the morning and attend an informal Burmese language lesson in the afternoon. We will reach Taguang for another late afternoon tour, which will show life on the riverbank and introduce you to this small town with its ancient fortifications, archeological area and famous nat or spirit shrines.

Day 6: Sailing: Katha (B, L, D)
Have a relaxing morning, perhaps enjoying the facilities of our spacious Spa (including the only Swedish-style sauna on the Ayeyarwaddy) or our 8-meter whirlpool swimming pool, conveniently raised so while lying in the water you can still enjoy the passing scenery as we sail to Katha. Early afternoon we reach the enchanting colonial town of Katha, a setting of George Orwell’s Burmese Days. Little has changed since then. Of interest are the fire station’s collections of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company’s ship’s bells taken from sunken ships in the Second War. Katha was the final resting place for much of the old flotilla as over a hundred ships were scuppered here in 1942 – an act of denial before the advancing Japanese. Our tour will take you around all the places that appear in the book and give you the opportunity to really imagine how life was in this far-flung corner of the British Empire.

Day 7: Sailing: Naba Train Ride, Katha Market (B, L, D)
In the morning, we will take an oriental train ride from Katha to Naba through the thick Kachin jungle and teak forest. Enjoy this very scenic train ride passing through villages in the forest. Upon arrival in Naba, we transfer back to Katha for a Katha Market visit. It’s time for some shopping at the colorful local market of Katha, where you can practice your Burmese language skills during a market rally (no worries, language lessons, an assistant and change is provided for shopping). In the afternoon you may relax on the sun deck while we continue sailing upstream to Shwe Gu. Afternoon tea will be served before a lecture on Myanmar history and current affairs. As the evening approaches and the Burmese sun immerses everything in a golden light, a special event will take place at the Kipling’s Bar. Dress up in style as we send “a toast to the past” during a British Club where gents may whiff cigars and ladies sip on tasty gins with tonic. Share some tales of the old British-Burmese days. Day 8: Sailing: The Second Defile, Kyun Daw Island (B, L, D)
In the early morning, be prepared on the sun deck as we make our first passing through the impressive Second defile. This will take about two hours depending on the force of the current. Enjoy your breakfast on the sun deck while passing through the dramatic Second Defile. Once on the other side, we will turn at the Sinkan Bridge and begin our return journey by plunging again into the fast flowing waters of the Defile. It may take as little as 25 minutes to reach the other end! We sail on, passing Kyun Daw Island where we visit countless small pagodas, local villages and river nomads who live on the river banks of the Ayeyarwaddy. We return to the ship for lunch and contain our journey to the South of the Ayeyarwaddy River. After dinner, enjoy the entertainment of our crew with their talent for Myanmar’s traditional dance.

Day 9: Sailing: Hsithe (B, L, D)
In the morning we offer yoga and meditation on the sun deck. Those wishing for some mental stimulation can join a lecture on ‘Religion in Myanmar’ and another Burmese language lesson before lunch. After lunch, there will be demonstration of Traditional Burmese Cigar and Chewing Betel Nut. In the early afternoon, we reach the picturesque fishing village of Hsithe. The village is home to fishermen who conduct co-operative fishing with the critically endangered Ayeyarwady River Dolphin. We will take you on a village tour, see the traditional agriculture products and teach you how to cast a traditional fishing net. Afternoon tea will be served at the visitor center of the village with a presentation about the river, the wildlife and the people. We return to the boat for dinner. Afterwards, you can join the outdoor cinema at the village together with the friendly villagers of Hsithe.

Day 10: Mandalay (B, L, D)
Today you have the last opportunity to simply relax, enjoying the luxurious facilities on board and the passing scenery as we sail to Mandalay. Be prepared on the sun deck as we make our way passing through Mingun, a showcase of the monumental and unfinished stupa of King Bodawpaya. It has never been completed due to an astrologer claiming that states: once the temple would be completed, the king will die.
We reach Mandalay late in the afternoon where you will disembark in time to visit Amarapua known for its traditional silk weaving, silver and bronze casting, and to see the sunset at the famous “U Bein’s Bridge”, the longest teak bridge in Myanmar. After a farewell dinner, enjoy the evening entertainment Ramayana show, a legendary story and performance accompanied with traditional music instruments.

PAYMENT TERMS & CANCELLATION POLICY

Unless Active Asia Travel advises otherwise in its sole discretion, the below payment terms and cancellation policies will apply.

Payment Terms

25% non-refundable deposit is to be made upon commitment of the tour unless booked within 45 days.

50% of the total tour cost to be paid 60 days prior to arrival date.

25% of the total tour cost to be paid 30 days prior to arrival date.

Full payment is required 45 days prior departure or within 24 hours of confirmation if travelling within 45 days from departure.

There may be additional fees required – Active Asia Travel will advise specifically case by case.

Cancellation Policy

All cancellations must be made in writing and acknowledged by Active Asia Travel.

22 days or more prior to arrival date: 20% deposit

21- 15 days prior to arrival date – 50% of the tour cost

14 – 8 days prior to arrival date – 75% of the tour cost

Separate Agreements

For some clients, Active Asia Travel may have alternative and separate payment and cancellation policies in place. If a separate and valid agreement is in place, then the terms outlined in the separate and valid agreement will supersede those mentioned above.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY & TRAVEL PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT

Active Asia Travel shall not be held liable for (A) any damage to, or loss of, property or injury to, or death of, persons occasioned directly or indirectly by an act or omission of any other provider, including but not limited to any defect in any aircraft, watercraft, or vehicle operated or provided by such other provider; and (B) any loss or damage due to delay, cancellation, or disruption in any manner caused by the laws, regulations, acts or failures to act, demands, orders, or interpositions of any government or any subdivision or agent thereof, or by acts of God, strikes, fire, flood, war, terrorism, insurrection, sickness, quarantine, epidemics, theft, or any other cause(s) beyond their control. Participants waive any claim against Active Asia Travel., JSC. For any such loss, damage, injury, or death. Participants understand that the itinerary, schedule, prices and services can alter without prior notice for any reason. Participants are solely responsible for being in sufficient health to undertake the tour and for taking all appropriate medical precautions. Active Asia Travel., JSC strongly advises participants to obtain medical/ trip and cancellation insurance.

Do you offer any pre-made packages?

We offer both pre-made packages based off our sample itineraries, and customized tours catered to individual interests. Tour prices vary depending on the chosen activities, level of accommodation and time of booking.

What should I expect if I have booked an airport transfer?

After collecting your luggage and completing the immigration and customs procedures, you will walk through the exit gate. Our local guide and driver will be holding a welcome sign with the Active Asia Travel logo and your name. Airports in Southeast Asia are often crowded, but safe. Please take your time to look around and locate the Active Asia Travel representative.

What happens if I have booked a transfer but cannot find it on arrival at the airport?

If you have a booked a transfer and are unable to locate us, please call the emergency number of the local operations office(s) listed on your itinerary or service voucher. If you don’t have a mobile or cell phone, please ask the airport staff where you may access a phone. Hotline support 24/7: +84 906272467

How to cancel the booking I have made?

If for any reason you need to cancel and have booked directly with Active Asia Travel, please contact us. Our booking terms and conditions, and additional terms and conditions, may apply. If you have booked through a travel agent, please contact your travel agent for any cancellations.

What happens if the hotel cannot find my booking when I arrive?

If you arrive at the hotel and they are unable to find your reservation, please immediately ask your tour guide to contact the local Active Asia Travel operations office so that the situation can be resolved straight away. If your tour guide is no longer with you, ask the hotel to contact the Active Asia Travel office in the country you’re visiting.

How can I transfer payments to you? Do you require a deposit for booking?

We require a deposit of 25% of the booking total to confirm the services for your trip. Payment can be made by credit card or bank transfer in the currencies of VND, USD, EUR or AUD.

What happens if my flight is cancelled?

Your agent protects your trip in several ways. If your flight is cancelled due to bad weather, mechanical breakdown of the aircraft on which you are scheduled to travel or an organised labour strike (provided the strike occurs after you pay your premium), you can take a later flight. You’ll be reimbursed for the additional transportation expenses to join your trip, less any refunds paid or payable for your original voucher. Plus, you will be reimbursed for the cost of any unused land or water travel arrangements.
